Hi, my friend has just bought a 318i on 95k. It was running rough and needed a service etc, so i advised him to get it and I'd give it a once over. It runs like a dream when the rev's get over about 1500 rpm, but when left to idle the engine missfires and runs like a sack of shit.
I've changed, spark plugs, ht's, dizzy cap, oil, oil+air filter, cleaned all the air intakes out with carb cleaner, changed all the air hoses for fear of an air leak.
Still can't find the problem. Could the timing be out?
Any suggestions would be much appriechiated.
Cheers, Jim
318i lumpy idle, no air leaks (all pipes changed)

Check your Idle Control Valve. Mine suffered build up of gunge which stopped it operating properly.
Take it off the car, give it a couple of taps on the floor, squirt in a bit of wd40, and try again. Mine runs lovely now.

I had it off when I changed all the air hoses, gave it a good clean out with carb cleaner. The thing is it idles at about 850/900 rpm no problem, but seems to missfire and rock the engine around in the engine bay. I think its been doing it for a while coz the engine mounts look a bit worse for wear.
Plz, throw more ideas at me. I've exhausted most of my options, and my experience is only limited to m20's, granted they aren't too much different.

got the same trouble with mine at the moment, although i have found the spark lead clip on sensor thing isnt connected so im checking into that, might be unconnected or worn through as the lead does head off around the engine! just a thought...

i am soooo not a bloody noob!!!!

This may not be the cause but check for continuity and voltage at the throttle pot. Also check for a meaningful reading at the oxygen sensor when the engine is up to temp and with the ingition off.
You'll get the specs in haynes or bently's manuals.
With the rocking back and fourth could it be a compression leak in one of the cylinders? Or something mechanical?
