Tapping sound when engine running

I get an annoying tapping sound when driving, what are the possible causes for this and how can you resolve it?

tappets either put thicker oil in or renew tappets i think any way

Or on a (slightly) more serious note, some more detail might help! Like what's the engine, & where's the noise coming from for a start...
E30 in need of wiring loom smoke since April '11...
