My newly acquired 320i Convertible (1990) has a judder to the steering bewteen 40+60mph. I have just had the wheels balanced and tracking done when tyres were chaned today but the judder is still there. Any ideas. PS the wheels/tyres are non standard 205/17/45's.
Also anyone know of leather timmers in the wirral/cheshire/merseyside area?
Many thanks,
G.

Long answer: could be a flat spot or even an axial runout on the rim. Or a badly made tyre. Or bad brake discs. Or worn steering/suspension bits.
No amount of balancing (hanging weights off the rim) will compensate for non-circular wheel. A wheel balancer just distributes centrifugal force evenly over the rim (the wheel has no vibration when spun in the air). If the distance from the road to the axle isn't constant, then you'll still feel a vibration.
You can guage this by watching the wheel on the balancer - any kicking will be obvious there. You can see if it's the rim or the tyre too. It is possible to straighten small flat spots with with a hammer (even on an alloy) using a phone book between the two to dampen the impact. You could end up making it worse just as easily though!
A bad wheel isn't nearly as noticible on the back axle, so try juggling them around.

hi mate
only joined today,no expert on the 3 series butwhat i do know is that if you've gotnon standard wheels, then check the diamiter of the hub and wheel centre, if not a snug fit then you can buy some hub rings.
and no more probs

I had this problem on my 325 running on a set of 17 inch BK's, when i returned the car to its std wheels the problem disappeared but then again so did the rims!
