Worth checking the spindle for wear. Remove the plastic vent in the scuttle above the motor and if there is lots of play when moving the wiper arms its knackered.
Could also be the wiper relay in the fuse box (the long rectangle one) but this usually causes problems on intermittent sweeps and the wipers not returning to their rest position.

You're probably best putting an ad in the wanted section for a decent used motor (I think Chris-W had one on his website iirc). The relay is stupid money new (about £40) but £1 from a scrappie.jimbobjimmy wrote:cheers ill check both when i collect the car saturday.

There's no common fault that kills the wipers completely, so you'll have to do some testing when you get the car.
If it is the 'relay' in the fuse box, cars with intensive wash/headlamp wipers use a different one to cars without.

i think i can make out that mine has headlamp wipers, will they work while the windscreen wipers work and when i have the lights on or just when i was the windscreen and have my lights on like my old cav gsi...
If its a typical E30 they probably stopped working in about 1992.jimbobjimmy wrote:i think i can make out that mine has headlamp wipers, will they work while the windscreen wipers work and when i have the lights on or just when i was the windscreen and have my lights on like my old cav gsi...

I can assure you that the electronics on BMWs has very little in common with that on a Cav gsi!jimbobjimmy wrote:i think i can make out that mine has headlamp wipers, will they work while the windscreen wipers work and when i have the lights on or just when i was the windscreen and have my lights on like my old cav gsi...
The headlamp wipers and washers on an E30 should work every fifth time that the screen washers are used when the lights are on.
If they've never been serviced, there's a good chance that the output shafts of the wipers have seized in their bush bearings by now. A good clean up and re greasing and they will be good for another ten years or so.
