I keep reading that chipping increases idle speed on a M20 from c.700rpm to c.900rpm.
Mine idles smoothly at 900. How can I tell if it has been chipped? Where's the ECU fitted, how do I get into it and what exactly am I looking for once I get into it?
Only thing that makes me doubtful is that above 5000rpm, even though it goes well it seems to be holding back. I would have thought that chipping wouldn't make it do that.
Anyone give me any pointers???
Cheers
Stuart.

ECU is located under dashboard on drivers side, to right of steering wheel. Remove cowl under steering wheel (3 x 90 degree turn-screws). You will see the main ecu with a dirty great cable connector on the front - it is held by 4 x 10mm bolts which go vertically, bolting it to the dashboard support frame. Remove bolts, unclip the cable connector, its out. you then need to bend up 4 (I think) metal tabs to take the ECU lid off. There is only one chip inside which is not soldered in - this is the one which may have been changed if you've been 'chipped'. If chipped, it should have some sort of label on it (Superchip are one maker, though apparently not liked bu some zoners). See another thread on the forum where someone talks about identifying after-market chips.
hope this helps, and sorry to anybody if I've described taking the ECU lid off wrongly - I haven't done it, only swopped a faulty ECU over.
