When the fuel pump stops on the road like this, it's usually just jammed due to a ridge wearng into an internal part of the pump.
Try taking the pump out and whacking it with the pump pliers out of the toolkit. This will usually unjam it for a while.
If this fails, then rip the filter off the bottom and stick a small screwdriver up inside to turn the gears a bit.
I bought a 318 very cheap about three years ago, and found out shortly afterwards why it was cheap - it would suddenly stop in the middle of nowhere with fuel pump failure. I didn't have a spare pump at the time, and the first replacement I found turned out to have the same problem, so I got this roadside repair down to a fine art.
P.S. I once used a similar bodge on a carb car. Filled the washer bottle with petrol, connected the washer pipe to the carb, and drove with the washer pump held on.
