My first e30 so please excuse me if this is a stupid question but the word check illuminates and flashes on and off on my dials why is this? and secondly the temp gauge goes all the way to max on start up and then stays there. Are thease 2 faults related? Also on my overhead check pannel the oil light is permanatly illuminated despite the oil level being correct. the brake light on the check pannel also comes on but goes away on pressing the brake and the brake lights both work so again why is this?

You've probably got a faulty oil sensor making the check panel think your low, bear in mind though,it will usualy come on when the oil is halfway between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick.
If it turns out to be a faulty sensor, someone else will have to tell you how to fix it,not a job i've done.

The brake light check coming on is standard,it does it on ALL E30's.

Temp gauge, probably a fault in behind the clocks, take out clocks and have a check of the connections etc

Hi The check light will flash if it detects a fault eg oil warning. It always flashes brakes at start up then goes off when you touch brakes. You may have a faulty temp and oil level/pressure swich that causes your warning lights.Another possible fault on the temp gauge is a slack nut behind the temp gauge which requires taking the gauges out. There will be other helpers along shortly.
