Fuel light

Is my car meant to have a fuel light that comes on?
It's a 89 325iSE with the following spec that BMW have just emailed me.

215 * Power Assisted Steering 286 * Alloy Wheels
350 * Green Tinted Glass 401 * Electric Sliding Roof
411 * F+R Electric Windows 415 * Rear Window Blind
497 * Rear Central Arm-Rest 500 * Headlight Wash-Wipe
551 * On-Board Computer 812 * GB Specification

Yeah it should do, mine's an '88 325i SE and it has 1.4 gallons in the tank when the fuel light comes on. Have a look in your owners manual.
