It costs me £250.00 for a rebuild, new bearings etc and they sell for £250.00 or less so unless, like me, you need a odd ratio, I'd get another!

I know a company called last trasmissions in Suffolk that did mine, if you would like a number I can pass that on.

The reason I want a rebuilt one is they definitely start to become less and less effective once they've done over 50,000 miles. Secondly I read on another diff thread that the Alpina built diffs have a 40% slip rate. Can anyone confirm this ? Thanks.

For the cost of rebuilding a diff compared to buying a 2nd hand one.. Wouldnt you be happier knowing gthat your diff was like new again rather than not knowing who's been drifting with it?

the clutch packs only have 10 hours lock up so most if used hard will be shot by know.

no brainer a secondhand zoner diff or a rebuilt one................

Thanks Mark I'll let you know if I end up taking it to them. Only ten hours lockup !!! Do all clutch LSD's wear out that quickly ? In that case I don't think I'll be modifiying the pressure ring ramp angles or it'll be f#@&ed before I know it !

£250 does seem to be the going rate for a rebuild, but this generally doesn't include the LSD unit itself. For £250, you will get new bearing & seals etc, but the LSD probably won't be touched.

best give a few places a call!

if they are rebuilding they best rebuild the lsd bit!

get a better slip rate too. 40% sounds nice

but if it does creak or whine it shoud still last a fare distance.

i hope you go for the rebuild option. it keeps the diff in use too rather than just throwing it away.

this is a 4.1 medium case I had shipped in from the states so I'd hate to not have it rebuilt. It's actually been very good to me and still locks up. I'm just worried that if it's creaking quite badly like it is that it will be inconsistantly locking up / going open which will not do much for confidence in the car when it comes to getting power down or drifting.

No probs.

When you say "creaking" , it's quite normal to hear an lsd to sort of 'shuffle' the inside wheel at low speed - like when doing a tight 3-point turn.

Not being able to turn the wheels against each other is a good sign!
If one rear wheel is off the ground it should be difficult to turn it with an E30 lsd.

Yeap - I know it should be hard to turn - and I expect the harder to turn against each other the better too. But I thought that a 25% diff should at least be turnable? I can't turn mine at all! It's from a US M3 but I thought they're all 25%?

The creaking is like a tight loose, tight loose sound - from the inside of the diff rather than any wheel scrubbing.

Even if it's not completely f00bed I'd still like it serviced, and maybe 4plate upgraded so I *KNOW* it's working, and more to the point working consistently - For example, I don't want it lock up and then go open, then lock etc when I'm trying to drift. I don't really know a lot about LSDs so maybe that's not even possible...

edit: I should definitely point out that this diff took abuse from me running slightly different sized tyres on either side of the rear axle. Like being on a 500mile long corner. Not a clever thing to have done

Well - I heard back from gearboxman.co.uk - about 120 + vat + parts for a basic rebuild he's not too far from me either. will report back when it's been rebuilt. Potentially going to do 4plate mod and increase lock-up but will take it on their advice after they've popped the diff open and I've had a chat with them.

I plan to eventually rebuild my diff too, but it's way down the list of jobs at the moment (mostly due to money), mine doesn't always lock too well. It's still very hard to turn one wheel off the ground though.

Like it has already been suggested on here, most E30 lsd diffs that haven't been rebuilt will be quite tired by now.

I'm still learning about diffs too so I'm sorry but I can't diagnose your strange noises just yet!

I had a good 60-70mph 3rd gear tank slapper on the way home the other night! (Still need to go proper drifting though! )

I'm the same ... Look out the window "yes, it's raining" people in the office are like "you're f*****g weird" - lol

When it's wet I got an extra two miles on my way home just to include one corner.

Slip road from A3 to Coombe Lane for those who know it. Back just falls out smoothly and seems to stay there.

Tried some 3rd gear roundabout stuff just before the "summer" ... Let's just say I still need to work on it
