dodgy petrol gauge

in the mornin wen my car is cold the petrol zooms up to full, if i tap it it goes bk to normall place but more than often jst goes straight bk to full, this doesnt happen wen the car has been drivin a while and also if the tank is empty the red light shows up but the needle still does the same

Had the exact same problem as you, mine just kept getting worse and worse and eventually tapping it did nothing.

Here is how you fix it. Bascially you need to remove the gauge cluster, unscrew it so you can get at the gauges, remove the fuel gauge sand off the little connector piece both on the unit and on the gauge itself so that it makes proper contact, reconnect it, and voila. Its all in the link. Cheers.
