LSD will have an 'S' on the little metal tab before 3 numbers that are the ratio, ie S391 would be an LSD 1:3.91 ratio (some one correct me if I'm wrong it's been a while so I'm a bit sketchy) The metal tab is always rusty and a bugger to read.
Otherwise if it's in the car plant the accelerator and drop the clutch, if it leaves 2 black marks it's an LSD if there is 1 it's open.

planting the right foot sounds more fun! would a 318is diff work well on a 320i?

find a verge on the road side, or summin?
park one side on the grass and on on tarmac, then plant it ish,
if u spin up but dont really moove then u have a open diff.
