Ever since i bought my 318i it has had a noisy cam and never reved above 4500rpm. Anyway i fitted a new cam on saterday and it ran perfect! Today however i started it up and the noisy cam was there again, only 10 times louder but went away after about 10 seconds. The old cam was very worn but had marks on it that were in all directions rather than round the lobe. small little marks have apeared in the new one even after service, flush etc. does anyone have an idea what is wrong? oil pump maybe?

M40 cams are born to trouble: I had a similar experience when I bought my 318 and had cam and followers replaced. The guy that did it said the trouble was the flimsy-looking oil rail that feeds the cam - tiny holes that silt up, and he made me use fully synthetic.
[They now think I'm touched at Quick fit when I ask for Mobil 1 for my F reg, but 2 years on it still works a treat.]
Also - a bit of noise at start up is normal and the injectors make a ridiculous noise that I mistook for a new bout of cam rattle - listen with a stethascope to see what's making the row.

Cheers mate. took the car to my mates garage tonight. he was unable to test the oil pressure but he doesnt think that it is the pump. he looked at the new oil i put in and thought that it was very thin for 10-40. going to buy some magnetec and flush it again. if that fails he said it must be a cheap cam. fingers crossed!
