can I tell from engine number what original car was?

as my car has been fitted with a 325 engine, with the engine number can I tell what the original car was and the spec also? where can I find the engine number?

The chassis number will tell you pretty much everything about the car.

Put the last 7 digits of the chassis number into the following link:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do

All will be revealed.

Dealer can give you a print out of the car's original spec. from the VIN.
Zimmerbimmer1 was offering this service yesterday, with all purchases.

The OP is asking if he can find out what car his engine has come from.

Have you a friendly local dealer, I'm sure they could find out for you by giving them the engine number.

Down on the side kinda near the steering pump I think, but could be wrong. It could be hard to see to because of rust etc
