Whats this honey comb textured piece of metal inside Piston?

Apparently they're there to control piston expansion. They're bits of steel. Not sure why they've got the pattern on them though.

Are they at the same height as the rings on the outside? (stiffener)

No, much lower.

I also think its some sort of reinforcement for the piston.
