hi guys i have a e30 cabby on a j plate and i was told when i bought it that a 2.5 motor had been fitted (its a 320 on the logbook) how can i tell by lookin at it?

Inlet manifold is a good start. If it looks more angular, it is a m20b20. if the pipes look more curved it is a m20b25.

This is only a guidline as someone could have fitted a b20 inlet to a b25 at some point.

2.5/2.7 stamp on the exhaust side of the head.

Drive it - if it's slow it's a 2.0, if it feels like it's got a decent amount of poke, it's a 2.5!
E30 in need of wiring loom smoke since April '11...

Engine type number will tell you. There's a flat machined area on the block near the LH engine mount, which has the engine type number and serial number stamped into it.
If the first two numbers of the type number are 20 then it's a 2 litre.
25, then it's a 2.5.
