noisy tapetts

Have just purchased a 318i touring and restored it to it's formar glory
have had it serviced now engine is occasionally very tappety.
was about to pu STP in the engine

car has done 126k

any recommendations on oil?

any information would be very much appreciated

if this doesnt help, change your injectors but that would mean theyԚ´re not sat great in the head so... itll cost alot

changing them for e36 jets can cause probs with overfueling

also a ill fitting exhaust manifold into main system could cause a loudish "tapping" sound

i know there are more possibles, but i dont know what they are

Yes this is correct, there is no way of getting rid of the noise except to change the Rockers/Tappets/Cam.

Will the Engine Rev to 6k?

yes the engine will rev to 6k

there is absoultly nothing wrong with the engine compression test o.k

the car has been serviced regularly since new

just the tappety noise is annoying I'm sure it is oil related.......

get some duckhams 10w 40 oil, whack that in in your next service, and use that wynns hydraulic lifter cleaner (it did nothing for mine but still try it its not much) it will make it better but wont make it dissapear

duckhams oil is best suited for older engines as it quietens it down.... and its a funky green colour too. if you use fully synthetic (i used fuch titan pro) it will make it noisier. as someone said earlier the ultimate way to eradicate this is to get a new camshaft, rockers etc, as all your rockers wil have worn a slightly different profile. i have a complete head with new camshaft that may go on mine... that is if i dont sell it first. hydraulic lifters are self adjusting so no they dont need adjusting... its the valve clearances that need doing on M10s and M20s when they start getting tickety

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but my car is ticking like mad since I changed the oil on Monday, it does go away now and again, but mostly its there... also found out that it wont rev past 5000 so I guess that its fecked?!

yeah mines does this too but theres not much else i can do about it but keep changing the oil every 6 months...it does die down a bit after changing, possibly use the dukhams oil the dlanberry suggested.

Think its too late for mine - tho i've not tried revving above 6000rpm!

Thats what I put in it, 10/40 Semi Synth, will try some of this Wynns noise reducer stuff....

dont bother with the wynns noise reduction stuff its a waste of money. the best thing you could do to stop the noise for once and for all would be to get a brand new or nearly new camshaft (from breakers) with the matching rockers, then the noise would go. to be fair trhe only thing that affects performance i found was the hydraulic lifters, as when they get stuffed full of gum they dont open properly, hence the not revving about 5k... my 316i revved all the way to 6k. i'd say i have a new camshaft setup to sell you, but i sold it with the spare head i had a couple of weeks ago.

I noticed no one mentioned a worn oil pump. This would lead to low oil pressure, and then what would that do?

the low oil pressure would knacker the camshaft and rockers, as it would run dry due to the M40s bad spraybar design.

yeah i did replace the oil spray bar at cost of a tenner from bmw but its not made any difference really.

My m40's always had a bit of top end clatter but started making a very loud noise occasionally- like a sort of tink tink tink, sounded like one tappet was properly sticking. Stuck some Wynns hydraulic lifter treatment in and it stopped the loud noise immediately. General fiesta-esque rattle is unchanged though. I guess it works to clean out a specific problem (i.e. gummed up lifter) but wont cure 100 000 miles of wear.

M40s often suffer from camshaft wear, but that is nothing to do with the diesel engine impressions.
That is entirely down to a less than successful early design for hydraulic tappets. Anything over 60,000 miles and no tapping is a bonus.
Engine flush (try a diesel oil for six months), and experimenting with oil grades may or may not help, depending on whether the tappets are gummed or worn.
