With regards to the front seats, most M3 were fitted with BMW Sports seats, these are also fitted to the 325iSport, and were an option for the 318iS. I think one of the later M3 Evo models had highback sport seats.
The back seat for the M3 is designed to accommodate two people, similar to the back seat in a cabriolet.

Sorry, misunderstood about seatbacks. The mechanisms for the front seats should be the same if you are comparing BMW sport seats. However, there is a difference between the mechanisms on a Recaro seat and a BMW Sport seat. You can tell the difference between a Recaro and a Sport seat by the profile of the backrest.

Oops, also meant to say that the seats are opposite, i.e. LHD vs RHD, so the seat with the two lift mechanisms(passenger seat) will be the left seat in a 325iS but the right seat in a M3.

Always assumed the seats were fundamentally the same. The only real difference i've heard of is that the stitching on genuine M3 seats is horizontal and on 325iS' it's vertical.

All the bmw sports seats are the same.
The only seats that are different where the optional Recaros.

i already have a full m3 interior (front LHD seats reversed sides of course) and the rear two seat bench.
i was just wanting to refurb the runners and mechanisms because mine are a little worn, but instead of just looking for m3 seats i was just wondering if sport seats were the same. should of explained this earlier, sorry.
also i don't mean the bit you back rests against, i mean the cardboard bit you look at if your sitting in the back seat looking infront of you at the back of the seat. mine is all scuffed and scraped so i was wondering if anyone knows if these are also any different
cheers
