erratic running 85 325e...o2 sensor???

my 85 325e runs fine for a while then stalls out but will continue to run with my foot holding the pedal down but in this case very rough with copious black smoke coming out of the tail pipe. then, for no reason will go back to running normally. could this be the o2 sensor????? thanx!!!
