Hi all. I hope someone may be able to point me in the right direction on this one...
Just bought an '88 320is and had a few questions about the S14 motor so here goes.........
I'm getting 15mpg and i'm driving very easy(its left hand drive), its rough as guts and spluttery when cold and its idle is lumpy as grannys custard!!
I have a new intake pipe ordered cos the one between the afm and plenum chamber is perished but beyond that i dunno.
Oh yeah almost forgot its rattly too and the timing chain is relatively new.
Thanks in advance

Hi Gareth , its possible that your intake manifold gaskets are tired , this is a common item on the S14 . To test get hold of the plenum with the engine idling and push down on it or pull up and listen to any change in the running , if you cant hear anything then try spraying carb cleaner around the manifold and again listen for a change in the engine note . This may explain the high fuel consumption ! , I've had many M3's and find that new plugs make a massive difference too . The rattling noise is most probably the valve tappets that need adjusting .
Let me know how you get on , regards Steve .
