driving home it just lost power (but still idling ok) and when I held the throttle all the way down it would take a couple of seconds then it would rev up to 1500 then drop down to idle, then a couple of seconds later it would rev again and drop back.

so I drove it home holding it at 1200 rpm and when about a mile from my house it started to rev past 1500.

I haven't taken it out on the road since but left it idling a few times and it hasn't done it since (it has a slight miss fire when reved hard but this might not be part of the same problem)

How is your throttle cable? and how is the throttle body itself?

Fuel problem? Fuel pump on the way out/pressure regulator pipe split or something?

Could be the speed sensor on the bellhousing. When this fails the engine will idle fine but just won't rev.
