I am looking at changing the engine in my 1984 316 from an 1800cc auto to a 1600i manual or 1800i manual. Is it possible? If so how much of a job would it be and where could I find information on how to do the conversion.
Cheers

Certainly possible, but it's one of these jobs that there's a lot more to do than you think when you first get the idea.
Nothing is particularly dificult, but I would strongly recomend that you obtain a complete donor vehicle, so that you will have all the bits you require including various bits of wiring loom, brackets, clips, etc. and the fuel supply system. Two things that I'm not sure about on a car of this age, are whether the fuel tank can be usrd with an injection pump, and whether your car would have the C101 engine loom connector plug and socket .

i have done this conversion and as brian says you need a doner car of the same age to avoid the c101 plug issues; the biggest problem i had was with the clocks, but it turned out to be a fault with the doner car your fuel tank can be used. i hope this is of some help, cheers , john
