Do they work with a door open, i.e. is it just the switches. If they are working with the doors open then it's likely to be an earthing problem. Happened for a while on my Sport especially in the wet. A member suggested cleaning/tightening the cables on the starter motor connection (disconnect battery first). They've worked perfectly ever since. Might help.

You are aware that there are 2 seperate fuses for the windows?
One for doors closed, one for doors open!

there are 2 relays that control the electric windows.

they use 1 relay in normal use (ignition on) , and the other one when the doors are open & ignition is off.

so if they work when the ignition is off/door is open then you know it's the other relay.
pick a relay that you know is good (i.e. something like the horn one is easy to check) and swap em over. then you'll know for sure.

Fuse 17 is for the windows/roof with the ignition on. Fuse 28 is for the windows/roof with the doors open, ignition on or off. Both 30A.

If they boh stopped working at the same time, then probable culprit is the cut out switch. Either acting up, or a wire fallen off the back.
This assumes the wiring is as BMW intended, and hasn't been "got at".

Cutout switch is the one in front of the drivers window switch.
Currently slumming it in an E46 Touring
