Right, I've cleaned the ICV, removed, cleaned, and reset the (filthy) TPV (which passes the multimeter test), changed the plugs, and run a bottle of injector cleaner through.

Basic cold starting is still a lot better, but I'm still getting the following symptoms:
  • Poor cold starting if it's been raining
  • Really rough idle once started while cold (much smoother once warm)
  • Exhaust often smells of petrol during cold idle
  • Exhaust sometimes smells of petrol even during warm idle, after a drive
  • Very unhappy to cruise along in gear at lowish revs without throttle - when most cars would just gently engine brake, it starts to kangaroo
  • When I press the thottle from idle, it struggles momentarily, before picking up the revs
  • Generally quite poor low-down torque, and unhappy low down - needs a lot more revs than I'd expect to move off
  • Poorer MPG than I'd like - ~24mpg mixed, ~27-8 on longer steady journeys
I know that the ECU is designed to richen the mix when cold, but I wonder if it's doing it too much? Might an over-rich mix low down all the time might explain a lot of this? (BTW, the mix higher up is OK, as I've tested it on a motorway run with a wide-band lambda kit.)

I'll try and take it for a slower drive with the wide-band attached this weekend, and see what this shows lower down. In the meantime... any ideas?

Thanks :)

Check the injector wiring under the inlet manifold, this could be so many things. Good luck!

I've been having a few of the same problems with mine.

missfires when first started but fine when warm.
exhuast smells very strongly of petrol at all times.
and i get the kangaroo problem aswell.

my mpg is about 15 round town but will do about 35-40 on a motorway run.

I was told it could be a maf problem.

Thanks for the suggestions guys :)
  • Blue temp sensor: I've not checked it. Can it be checked, or is it just something to replace? Will search...
  • Rotor and cap: on the to-do (and to-search!) list.
  • Air leak: I've not seen an obvious air leak, and have had the MAF-TB trunk off a couple of times. I'll have a closer look everywhere else. Gaskets are on the to-do list...
  • Injector wiring: what am I looking for? Just obvious damage, or do I need to get busy with a multimeter?
  • Plugs: I've not checked the new set yet, as I wanted to give them a couple of tanks before looking. Will do, and report back.
  • MAF: not cleaned yet. Will do.
Looks like a busy Sunday...
