notchy when cold.ever since a local garage serviced my car [inc gear oil ] the gear change has become very difficult when cold sometimes even graunchy when its warmed up gearshift is fine ive since had a new clutch fitted but its still the same any advice would be appreciated [the car is a 325i 1989 ]

Put ATF fluid in it.

Sounds like the replacement oil is thicker - or TOO thick...
The oil is thinner when hot, so the gearchange is easier.
Currently slumming it in an E46 Touring

Both the above are probably right.
The garage probably drained ATF out of the gearbox and replaced it with the correct stuff.
Using ATF is a well known and acceptable way of curing a stiff gearchange.
