My 318is is progressively sounding worse in the first 5-10mins of driving.
The engine starts first time, but it ticks over with a really high pitched chirping noise - almost like screeching rubber?....
The sound reminds me of when a fan belt is shagged on a car. But as we all know the 318is is chain driven.
Does any one have an idea what the problem might be?
Cheers,
E30 318is - Chirping rather than reving....

To eliminate the belts as the source of the noise;
1. Get a small cup of water.
2. Open car bonnet.
3. Start engine a allow to tickover.
4. Carefully & SLOWLY trickle water onto the PAS / Alternator pulleys where the belts run over them.
The water acts as a temporary lubricant between the belt & the pulley.
If the noise suddenly stops - you've got a loose, stretched or otherwise shagged belt.
If the noise continues, it's something mechanical (a mechanics stethoscope or a long screwdriver will come in useful)
