Which Springs?

Hi all

I am now getting fed up with the springs on my -60/40 H & R Cup Kit on my 325i Cab.

The rear springs have settled to the degree that the top of the tyre is almost in the arch and pulling away, heavy loads and rear passengers just cause the tryes to scrape the arches

Having just bought some new Goodyear Eagle F1s for my rears , I am not about to shag them.

I want to replace my 60/40 springs and will be selling them soon. I want some 35/40 all round. Any recommendations ? I have looked at the Zone Shop and the KW seem keenly priced.

I am thinking of going for these soon, from what I've heard they a bit firmer than the H&R springs, wether thats a good thing or not i dont know.

Not too many people seem to have this set up yet.

Sorry Mahmood i have no experience with KW springs but i've been told they give a true 40mm on the back. Probably best to stick with 60/40 to keep with the shocks of the cupkit

Yes, the cab looks good (now with hard top) but somethings are best left to others.

I have taken off the 'pimp' smoked MHW rears and have no intention of putting any smoked lenses on the car. I am not happy with the low ride stance so something will have to give; namely the springs.

No pics yet, still some unfinished business to take care of in the ICE dept and getting the 'Pinas refurbed. Now that I don't have a smooth tarmaced private parking space with no kerbs, kerbs are my number one enemy on London streets ! My 'Pinas look shocking. However, they have some new Eagle F1 rubber

I have used avo 10-007 kit for a 325i.

...nose down; excellent handling; cheap; been on for 2 years (and approx. 8k miles) with no problems on standard shocks.

Your ride looks just right in terms of the gap between the wheels and arches.

Avo prices seem keen £73.50+VAT. Do you know how many mm your cab has been dropped by? Is it 35mm?

OK, in doing my research, I am told that "If you are lowering your car by more than 40mm short shocks are required"

Given that I have a H & R Cup Kit (short shocks me thinks) , I presume I should look at just changing the rear springs to -40mm instead of 60mm. Will that sort out my problem?

Mate, I'm surprised a little bit at the rubbing problem.

But then, there is a reason why the standard 15" BBS alloys are a damn good choice on the E30 !

Give me a call - might have an idea to cure this problem

AVO springs are linear rate horrid things and are extremely stiff. You only realise how shocking they are when you change to H&R springs.

E30Pilot and myself both had 325i Tourings, mine with a Cup kit and his with AVO Springs. His car rolled more and was far more crashy.

KW Springs were very good on the early sport I tried them on. I found them to be very similar to cup kit springs but with a true 40mm at the rear.

The 35mm Cab springs from H&R lower more than 35mm! Ask Quaser, he bought some.

Spax springs are actually not bad but they do break quickly.

I would suggest a set of KW's.

mate i am riding on 17s with a 40mm drop all round and there is no rubbing what so ever even on a full ride, i have not even rolled the arches although i have done an oil sump already.

Sal - I have the greatest respect for your knowledge as you know... but

how can they be more crashy AND more roll

Either they are too stiff or they are too soft?

I'm not saying H&R are not better, but I rate the AVO springs, especially for the price - the ride is NOT crashy, with stock-shocks, whatever else their short-comings. It's very good. I have other cars against which I can compare directly, and it is a very good compromise ride.

Mahmood - you might not be able to run them with your current springs as you say, but to answer your question.... the drop was probably 30-35mm at the front, and 20-25mm at the rear.

Why do we have to keep slating stuff because its cheaper than the likes of Eibach?

With Avo's we found superb ride height which is practical, same sort of ride as Mtec springs, no bounciness and they have stood the test of time.

Read my post again - you only realise how shocking they are until you try H&R's. That post was made before I had tried H&R springs and I only had experience of AVO.

Yes they can be more crashy and roll more. This is to do with them being linear rate rather than progressive rate.

One of my M5's came fitted with AVO springs aswell - ruined the car. Standard springs went back in and it certainly took corners much better and had a nicer ride.

In the past 14 months I have fitted and tried out alot of suspension on E30's. I'm not saying I know everything but there is a certain amount of practical experience of suspension kits on E30's.
