Does anyone know if a 325i engine serviced reguarly but still on 150,000 miles will shortly need rebuilding ? ( how long do they usally last) if so what would you expect to pay for a full rebuild.
Or if like the older 2002 engines (you can get a complete new engine from Bmw for under two grand) a 325i can be bought for a simalar price ?
Whats the way to do it ?
Thanks Paul

Don't even think about rebuilding yet mate unles it's had a hard life.

They only run it at about 100k. Many on here are over 200 and still going well.

Run it until it goes bang, which could be anything up to 250'000 miles. Then buy a good secondhand engine and put that in. Run that until it goes 'bang', repeat process.............
Rebuilding a worn out 2.5 is a waste of time, way too expensive. £650 for a set of pistons for starters. :o

Paul, my 325(see sig pic) has 145k and shes still ripping up the roads!

My sport (in the bodyshop) had 190k and was abused ALL of its life. She drove lumpy and started rough at idle, but thats down to being abused!
It sort of prooves that even an abused 325 will go for 200k without too much grumble. Im convinced my sport would have made it well past 200k without going bang, but i wasnt willing to wait and have the paint done, so the engine came out to have the engine bay sprayed too (and she now looks VERY sexy!)

At that sort of mileage, bottom end should be still as new. Head gasket failure wouldn't be a surprise at this mileage, (aluminium on iron - moves every time you warm up the engine). Valve guides could be wearing a little ( blue smoke on over run and start up? ), and camshaft and rockers could be worn - remove cam cover and inspect lobes of camshaft. Any wear should be obvious.

richys touring has done 190k odd iirc and its one of the quickest 325i's ive driven and its even quicker now hes fitted the zone chip. 190k doesnt seem to have dented the performance there at all.

My little beauty has just gone past 208,000 miles bit of a ticking up top but nothing really to worry about. Doesnt smoke and still gets to 60 in about 7 seconds i reckon it will do 300,000 easy like it was said earlier leave well alone until it makes its own problems :D
