either 60000miles of four years which ever comes first, they should also be replaced if the tension has been released on them, for example if you change the waterpump. And if you do change the belt also change the tensioner and would be silly not to replace the waterpump while you are there.

i am assuming he was asking for the recommended interval as per BMW.
no reason not to follow this reccomendation.
if you have just bought the car i would change it irregardless, its a couple of hours work and not much more than 100quid parts (if you include waterpump) also worth noting that the belts should have an expiry date on the package, dont buy an old one!!!

Seem to change my belt every few months as I keep removing it to fix bloody oil leaks water leaks head gaskets the list just goes on and on. At Ԛ£20 or so better safe than sorry.
The actual frequency depends on the amount of time you start the car as this is when the belt is under the most stress eg taxi's change theirs every year or sooner.

If I can't fix it I'll f**k it up so bad nobody can!!
