I have a 325i convertible 1989 which has developed a fault with the immobiliser control unit. I lost all power to the ignition coil and fuel pump.
I was on my way abroad and needed to get the car going so bypassed the electric circuits. Since then the automatic gearbox will only allow use of third and reverse. I have changed the control unit. This has given power back to the coil but not to the fuel pump nor has this released the gear box fron 3rd and reverse. Can anyone please tell me if they have encountered this problem and if so how did you rectify it?

First of all, welcome to the zone!
No electronics involved with a standard automatic, and nothing normally relevant to an immobiliser on a switchable auto, either.
Factory connection point for the immobiliser is a white two pin socket with two green wires going to it above the middle of the glove box.
To disable the immobiliser, this socket should be fitted with a plug linking the two pins together with a short loop of wire. There may be just such a plug and loop tied up to the loom nearby.

The auto gearbox has gone into 'limp mode' - ie. the ECU has detected a fault, or maybe faulty itself, and will only allow you third and reverse. It may be something as simple as a fluid change, or even a damp ECU.
