Sorry for starting up another thread about my pain in the @rse 316i, but I just need a quick response about something i've just discovered...
To sumarise, car runs pretty well on low fuel, but I've filled it up twice since i've owned it, and both times it has run like sh1te afterwards (dodgy idle, stalling, misfire, hesitant). I'm not sure at what point it starts to run ok again but I've just tried something that someone suggested...
I started the car, it was running dodgy as usual (about half a tank of fuel in), I took the fuel filler cap off and after the hiss of pressure the car started to run perfectly, almost straight away. When I replaced it, back to dodgy again after a few seconds. I repeated this 3 times, and had the same result.
I think I've found the reason for my car running daft, but has anyone got any ideas what I should inspect/replace/clean/hit?

Obviously the tank vent is blocked!
Assuming this is not a cat equipped car, the tank vent should open to the air at the end of a rubber hose tucked inside the reinforcement for the left hand front suspension turret. From there, it is connected to a steel pipe that runs along with the two fuel lines and brake line under the car (the rusty one) to the tank.
Doesn't go into the tank here, but goes through another pipe mounted on the tank to one of the hoses under the fuel pump inspection hatch. From here it goes through a flexible pipe under the cover half way up the inside of the rear right wheel arch, to the vent collector tank tucked up above the left rear wheel.
