I bought an old tatty 92, 316 tourer 8 days ago, small hole in front right N/S wing, dodgy front wheel bearing, exhaust hanging off at back, central locking not working, speedo not working.
Got some great tips here, cheers again dudes.
I changed the front bearing and this revealed a noise from the back left, turned out the big centre nut was loose, (phew, lucky the noise from the front stopped me throwing it about) horsed that and its fine now
1 - what should hold this nut on though.
The exhaust is absolutely fine except a couple of hangers on the back box have rusted through and the cat to backbox bracket has rusted part through, got qouted Ԛ£380/Ԛ£460 on high street, downer, when some brackets would do
2 - anyone know of a bracket type thingy for them
i've got it held up with jubilee clips and im getting a slight blow from the cat/backbox bracket.
i pulled out the connector from the drivers door pillar, it was solid, it took a pair of pliers and a lot of pulling on the release tabs, and of course I found the red/black wire connector had disintigrated. I replaced the red/black connector with a 1 foot length that now goes thru the hole in the connector, central locking works a treat now.
My speedo wasnt working but the trip counter and odo were working, i read about bad solder connections in the speedo circuit board so stripped the clocks out and resoldered the connectors i thought looked off (about 8 of the big ones) esp.. the ones on the pins that goto the coil things and the centre bit .
Now it works fine too.
going to try and get lucky and find a red N/S wing somewhere, so i wont mention the red one on ebay now, cos i'm skint ;( .
the only other problem with it is the brake wear light, the pads all look fine, so im thinking of bypassing them.
3 - is that an ok thing to do.
4 - I'm not hopefull on point 2 above so, can anyone point me to exhausts for the 316 preferably without a cat, although would this pass MOT.
What a motor, feels great to drive, looks totally hot and its been a pleasure to work on, im just gutted i dont use my car for work anymore, i want my 60 mile commute back.
Cant wait to see some hot motors tomorrow at coatbridge.
92 Touring Cheers for the help guys

3/ Once a brake pad wear sensor has been tripped it has to be replaced - about Ԛ£3-00 or so. There's also a common fault inside the instrument luster - Do a forum search for "220 ohm resistor" and my username.
Central locking: There are two red/black wires going to the door pillar socket. On the plug/door side of things, the wire just goes into the door and comes back out again. No need for the power to go into the door at all.
The repair is to cut both wires away from the socket (accessed behind the footwell speaker) and join them together.
This eliminates two permanently live pins in the connector, both of which encourage corrosion.

Sorry about the poor quality, but which bits of the exhaust bracketry are gone?
They are available & they aren't that expensive from the dealer.
You could also try the Online ETK at the top of this Tech Help forum.
It's a free version of the BMW parts catalogue.

The nut for the driveshaft should have a locking washer on it for the 30 mm nut. However I have just replaced a driveshaft and that used a 32 mm locknut with a defomed thread that locked onto the driveshaft thread as the locknut was tightened to 200 Nm.
