It's just a nuts and bolts job. Nothing technically difficult, but it'll take more than an hour or two.
Only thing missing off the replacement shell that I can think of will be the bracket for the coil pack.
You'll need to transfer the whole suspension, brakes and drivetrain if your replacement shell is anything other than another iS, a 325, or a touring.

Like brianmoooore says, pretty straight forward. just nuts and bolts really. I have just done this into my cab which had an M40 lump. The coil pack bits were about Ԛ£9 from dealers. i just bolted mine on but think they are spot welded on in factory.

16V IS engine!!!

If you change over the suspension, then the brakes will go with it. You'll need to swap the handbrake cables when you go from rear drums to discs.

cool thanks brian cut the front off the 318is today to get access to engine. it was a remake of texas chainsaw with a grinder to an e30. just gotta find an immaculate bodied 2dr e30 for the transplant...the hardest part...

Same job for a 316i. You can change the engine size on the V5, but if it was born a 316i, it'll always be a 316i.
