I've just bought an E28 1987 535i SE automatic (not M535) and I hope that someone can tell me if this model had a lsd as part of its standard spec. Many thanks.

you sure about that jhonno?

my money says it does. it's the same spec as an m535i but without the bodykit and might not have the recaros.

hmmm - i thought it was a similar situation to the Sport/SE 3 series - you could spec them to be the same without the kit..

I might be wrong tho on reflection..

no all cars were the same spec. the 535i was very rare and would best be likened to a 325 sport that had the bodykit deleted. the mechanicals are the same.

it had to be really because putting the 3.5 in such an old tail happy chassis made a pretty hairy car anyway, the 535i has the same bilstein suspension and everything just to cope.

Toby's right.

There was an article not long ago in TBMW and it stated, as Toby already said, that the 535iSE was the same as the M535i, but without the bodykit.

It does have the LSD. 8)

the auto is definately an lsd (my manual m535i has one and it was an auto when i got hold of it!)

i thought the autos ran different diffs too, but it appears not, i don't know why. because my m535i shows identical in gear maximums as a standard (dogleg box) m535i and i didn't swap the diff over

maybe someone swapped my auto's diff for a manual one earlier in it's life? although i doubt it as its FSH and it wasn't added as an option when new.

Sounds like they are the same then

I know this isn't to do with E28's but with Toby in on this conversation, I thought I'd point out that there's an E34 535i (manual) on Ebay for Ԛ£50 at the moment. Head gasket gone...

REALLY good project for an E30 conversion...

As always a great response in a short time to my question, many thanks.
F.A.O. Karan.......I will be selling the E28 535 SE soon so please get in touch if you wish to have mine with 68000 miles, virtually one lady owner, FSH, air conditioned, electric roof, M-tech wheels, arches & steering wheel and a 100% complete tool kit with all bulbs etc still in place! I doubt it has been abused since it is in the disabled tax group currently and there are virtually no chips to the screen or front end.

Geeman, some photos of the car (taken today) can be seen via:
http://groups.msn.com/AndrewsSales/shoebox.msnw

It looks great in the photos but it has had some paint work here and there, white hides it though! Worst rust is the underside of the drivers door where there is a hole which can only be seen from under the car. I have a fully stamped service book, some BMW and the lady's local garage stamped the book. Just passed the MOT. Only done 10000 miles in last 7 years. Matching Avon tyres all round. Runs excellently and no oil leaks on my garage floor. Extras include a huge car-phone, BMW rear blind, rear head rests, arm rests all round, & air con (untested). I'm awaiting more service invoices and original bill of sale to be found and passed to me. Probably going to advertise it on EBay with a Ԛ£1495 reserve.

those e34s do go cheap don't they Giles! i would buy that to get the loom, box, flywheel etc, then pick up a good engine from an auto with a dead box if you can't be bothered doing the HG.

the engine i've just put in mine cost me Ԛ£100 (could have had the car if i wanted it but no room; it got scrapped after i took the motor out), it has 130k on it but a main agent head rebuild including new head at 100k.

runs sweeeeet.

that sounds like good money for an e28 535i, they are damn rare. that's the one you like too, without the kit, right Giles winkeye

cool cars. can't have too many bmws!

to be honest me and a mate are looking for somewhere to rent to keep a few cars. wouldn't be too cheap, but a lot less stress! it annoys me having to keep all my cars taxed because i have no space off the road. and it would have been much easier to get a new engine for the 335 if i could just have trailered a whole car back home rather than drive to bedford, remove the damn thing then ram it into a 205!

as soon as we find somewhere suitable enough i'm buying the cheapest 750iL i can find. i went and test drove one a while back and thought it was very very cool. not quick, but cool.

The second E34 Giles posted a link for the bloke hasn't got a clue !

Lists it as an SE then calls it a Sport in the info !

And this made me laugh

Q: hi again, is it the V6 model ?
A: not sure about the engine.I think its a v8 but i'll find out for sure.

Fecking clue less !

Cheep donor car though 8)

that's the sort of person i like buying cars off! people who don't even know their own name!

their car might be a bit neglected but you'll get it for pennies because they don't really know what they're on about.

there's someone with a 535i sport engine for sale at the moment and they reckon because it's the sport it's 24v. yeah right mate its a fcuking m5 engine is it?
