Does anyone know what can go wrong with the front brake caliper carrier brackets (the unit that the caliper slides on)?

I'm asking as a last resort, as one of the 318is's that I am running has turned in to a complete pain in the arse with brake problems. It has already had two new front calipers, discs and pads (from bmw) but has still got a problem where the brakes develop a bad judder as they get hotter. I'm guessing that the problem must be with the only items that have not been changed, namely the carrier bracket and the chrome sliding pins. These looked to be in good condition when the last set of discs were fitted, but is there any way you can really check these?

btw, the problem definately seems to be with the discs (rather than ball joints, control arms etc) as I have swapped the last set of discs over on to my other car to test, and they are definately warped!

The slider's will soot up with brake dust very easily so clean them up and stick some copper grease on them when putting them back in

Also, clean the carrier where the pad's sit, that can build up with brake dust and cause the pad to go scew wiff thus leaning on the disc, causing the disc to heat up and warp.

The brake pedal action seems ok - the car had a new master cylinder last year and they now seem far more positive than my other car. The judder that happens when braking shows up as a shake / vibration that can be felt strongly through the steering wheel. As the car is driven for more miles (and the brakes used more often), it gets worse.

Just a thought.. check the steering uj for play as these can cause steering judder and it is right next to the manifold so will get worse with heat. there is a white bush in the middle and also check the rubber donut. If there is any play when you wiggle the steering uj you need to get the repair kit.

Cheers, I'll check that at the same time. What is the best way to establish if there is any play - Do you need to get someone to hold the steering wheel while checking the joint?
