I think I'm going to have to face up to this sooner rather than later. What parts do I need and how long would it take? Also, it is somthing that a meccano grade mechanic could attempt at home with some guidance or should I be sending this to the garage?
I'm guessing, head gasket/bolt set, new valves... anything else?

If it's for the M20 engine, 325i or 320i motronic then have a look in the tech articles at the one for stripping and rebuilding the cylinder head. All is explained there, you've just got to get the head off which isn't that hard.
If you're not confident then don't attempt it. It's quite involved but then I managed to teach myself by trial and error and wrote above mentioned article.
