inlet manifold question

can someone tell me what the deal is with this inlet manifold, ie the 3 pipes connecting at the front? It's listed for a 2.0 M20. Is this a pre-facelift model??

I remember seeing one just like that on a 1984 323i.

Never seen one since though :?
