my sport has developed a noise :(

when freewheeling there is no noise but if i apply power i get a knocking from the nearside rear.

Could it be need the driveshaft replacing ?

Is this a bitch of s job ?

unlikey to be a driveshaft as they're generally near indestructable. (so i've heard...)

not loose wheelbolts is it?

I noticed on my way in to work this morning, that the noise seems to be more noticeable after I've overtaken a few cars, sort of like when it gets a bit hotter... Is this a driveshaft problem?

It's hard to explain... Like every revolution of the wheel, there is a loud tick/click. It sounds louder on my side of the car than the passenger side - I got my brother to stick his head out the window and check!
It seems to get louder under load, so if i'm going up hill in a fairly high gear with a bit of gas, its louder than if i was going up in a low gear with a little bit of gas... Obviously, it speeds up as I speed up...

I can't really explain it better than that, but I recon it has got to be something to do with driveshaft/diff... The diff I'm running is the original one on my 316, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was giving up the ghost... but I dunno... It's not like the noise is constantly there either, which I would expect from a failing diff...

ok , ive jacked up the n'sr just now and nothing obvious to start with but i then noticed that if i grab the driveshaft i can slide it back and forth about 1 to 2 inches.

Is this normal ?

drivers side i cant slide it back and forward at all but its not jacked up on that side.

I reckon thes shaft is fooked.

do i replace or can it be repaired ?

Any thoughts appreciated

I stuck my car up on ramps this morning... Under the car, I can grab the shaft between the diff and the wheel, and wiggle it, like you bigdek... It does it on the other side too, but not as bad...

Is it fooked?

strange never had probs with dshafts

well only when ui was 16 and used to slaam my cars with a grinder at one point i used to shear the dshaft nuts off weekly as she was silly low

can only think it eitherr must be wheel bearings or the flanges where the dshafts join diff maybe??

sure someone will have had the same prob sometime

sorry not much help

I had this same noise, someone mentioned to me it could be the rubber donut on the end of the gearbox to the propshaft.

sounds like it could be the wheel bearing or the diff bearing that has collapsed! or quite possibly the CV joint in the driveshaft itself!

cv joint is probable as it fine against the diff and the hub just moves in between them

going to remove the shaft tomoorw for a better diagnosis

Sound has started again, but seems to have got louder... anyone got any other ideas? My shocks are knackered, but this doesn't sound like a knackered shock sound... Still seemsto be intermittent as well, although it is getting more frequent.

Seems not to make any noise until car has warmed up...

exhaust is fine, no knocks

topmounts, a bit of movement, but tbh well within what the should be moving, no knocks either..

when i went to move the jack tho, it made a solid metallic knock on the metal at the side while in its holder, gave it abit of a shake and sure enough it started knocking away happily, so ive wedged my map down the side of it to stop it hitting, and ill guess we will see in due coarse if that was infact the knocking :P

im up the garage on sunday so i can have proper little mosey undernethe then.. :)

Guys, some of this does sound similar to my own experience detailed here:
http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... highlight=

Have a read, if it's the same then at least you know what's up, turned out to be my driveshaft main bearing. Fingers crossed it's a cheap fix for you.
