Quite a few questions on this. I'm rebuilding my crashed 318is on a 316i shell. What i want to know is what, if any, is the difference, internally, between the gboxes from these cars. Are the ratios different? Is the 316 box weaker. I know the output on the Is box is slightly longer but can I use the 316 box. If the 316 is compatible then i'd rather use it as the IS box could do with a rebuild and i need to be back on the road as soon as possible.

patrick, the ratios in the 316i box is different to the iS box. i can found out how much by if you really want to know, but i do know that the 316i box is a faster accelerating box (closer ratio) than the iS box. i do believe they will fit.
i've got a 316i box for my iS once the engine rebuild has been done!

I can check the ratios by turning the shafts and all that, but it's a pain in the ass. i have both boxes out of the two cars and on the floor beside each other. I know it'll fit but will strength be an issue? Will the 316i box give better acceleration? I'm fairly sure i'll have to use the 316 driveshaft as well because of the length of the output shaft difference on the gearboxes. I have a lot of work to do now, with a gutted IS in the yard, a gutted 316i in the shed and a gutted 4 door 316 in the field and a shed full of parts, should be able to make a good car out of all three!! Do you know anywhere i could get a seat base for leather upholstery?? Only thing i'm missing really.
