I might being getting a early 325i engine from a mk1 sport with the intension of a rebuild. But as far as i know my touring has a late engine but what are the differences in them.Is it all in the engine or the running parts afm,ecu,t/body etc.

the only difference is the pistons i believe, early cars ran a higher compression. They lowered this to allow the engines to work with a cat converter i think

swop the following from the late to early and bolt her in dude.
1, water pump- you'll see why
2, lower cambelt/engine cover
3, front pulleys- again obv when you look
4, fuel rail needs to be swopped,as does the injector loom
and thats about it dude
early engine on later motronic is awesome, higher comp gives a real kick in the ass, will feel much perkier Wez
the AFM injectors etc etc for the engines are the same apart from a few oddball 320s running smaller capacity injectors, use the blues from the early engine with the later type fuel rail and you'll be laughing M8

Anyone know what the compression ratio of the early engine was? Mine's a 1985 which I thought had a 9.5:1 CR. Is that right or should that be higher?
