I was wondering if anyone's ever tried modifying the older type L-Jetronic (analogue?) ECUs fitted to the pre-Motronic era E30s. I have an '87 320iSE with such a system (ECU code 0 280 001 309). I just happened to have a spare ECU in the garage that looked similar (albeit with less terminals!) with code 0 280 001 301, and thought I'd try swopping them over to see if it made any difference. Result was that the engine initially briefly fired up then immediately died and no amount of further start attempts would get it to run - so I swapped back to the original ECU and all was well. The overall running of the car isn't bad, though nowhere near as responsive as my '88 325iSE (which has Motronic) but if anyone knows of a way to upgrade the older type ECU, I for one would be most interested...

Cheers,
Maurice, E. Kent.

Sounds like the ECU you swapped in wasn't running the fuel pump.
No idea on modding the old type ECU, i'm afraid. If it's analogue, it won't be re mappable, because iit won't have a map.

swop in the later motronic dude, being L-Jet you already have a lot of the required components.

better still, go MS and ditch the AFM for good, easy install on the jetronic cars too, as they have a "proper" dizzy
