New oil filter?

As anyone changed just the filter, at say 3000 miles. fully synthetic oil will not have degraded but the filter (being too cheap) might be full. So i was just wondering if a new one could be put on with out a truely horrible mess?

You'll have to leave the engine for a while cold to allow all the oil to run into the sump, then take the filter off, keep it as upright as you can as it'll be full of oil.
Use the Mann filters from German and Swedish.
What car you running fully synth in? Never a great idea in older cars, i stick to semi.

Changeing the filter with the sump still full of oil, is exactly the same as changing it when the sump is drained.
If your filter is full at 3000 miles, then your engine has not long for this world.

FS oil has been fine for the last 20 k miles (4 changes), a bit leaked out of the rocker cover gasket. A new gasket sorted that out. the engine has 38 k on it, so really is not near to death. the question was more hypothetical as, porsche now use mobile 1 0-40s over 5-40 and my m8 said he noticed a difference. the big difference i am guessing is that the smaller canister filters are getting cloged up faster and oil is circulating via the by-pass valve. so an early filter change and top up would probably see you through to say 8-10k miles.
Just for the record i noticed a 10% increase in fuel economy 29 to 33-34 mpg when i changed from magnetic 10-40 to mobile one 0-40. the engine was marginally louder too, but that was becasue the engine picked up way quicker. castrol rs 0-40 gave similar results and is available in 5l bottles.
when i did this Mobile one had done their million mile (or something mad like that) test on a e30 325i.
engine oil is like beef burgers...if you get FS then it is like dinnning on a fine steak burger and 20-30w mineral is like a tasty cheese burger, they both work, but the latter has a whole heap of additives there to make it do its job.
I have seen that mobile and amsoil do an oil filter in the US that is fully synthetic, i.e. not paper based, and out performs everything else. They are not marketed in the uk as euro engines are more refined and do not leak so much combustion crud into the oil. I am going to try and get one whilst i am there next month.
