Hi guys,

I've been rebuilding my 325i engine, and in the course of cleaning the sump out, I've found that one of the mounting hole 'flanges' on the oil level sensor (the ones that slip over the studs on the sump) has cracked clean through. It seems that the only thing that was keeping the two parts together was years of accumulated oil and cack. :D

Anyway, what I need to know is wether or not I need a sensor. The engine isn't going back in an E30 - it's destined to go into a Marlin Sportster kit car. As far as I know, this sensor used to illuminate a light on the overhead check panel in the car, should the oil level drop. As the Marlin won't have a check panel, is there any need for the sensor? Does the ECU use the sensor in any way?

If not, I can just make a plate and cover the hole the sensor used to occupy. If I do need one, anybody got a spare? ;)

If it's going in a Marlin then just blank the hole off. There is no connection between the sensor and the ECU. It's only used for the Check Control unit.

As for a blanking plate, you can get one from the dealer.

11 13 2 240 942 - approx £2

Cheers,

Ian.
