ok im fairly sure i need to redo the head gasket in my 1990 318is. Sheis smoking at the exhaust and the car isnt heating right. Is this very labour intensive? What sort of cost am i lookin at? Could it be done by a few guys handy with spanners or would it take an experienced mechanic? Does anyone have a parts list or price guide on this?? thanks

Gasket kit & bolts will cost around £100, head skim up to £50 and it's around 6 hours labour. Ish.

hiya mate,
Just done a cylinder head and front of engine rebuild on my 318is. It can be a bit a tricky if your not to handy with the old spanners! i would recomend that if your having a go yourself then you follow the instructions out of an e36 haynes manual as this covers the m42 engine in greater detail, As the e30 318is was only in production for a year. cost me around £250 to do the job myself that incuded, gsf gasket kit, timing chain cover gaskets(BMW),Timing chain, guides and tensioner(BMW),Water pump(BMW),and a head skim. took me about 5-6 hours to do the job,Timing up the engine is the most critical part of the job.
Give it a go!!!!!
