I have a European 1989 320I convertible and I am having some serious Wiring issues.
I was recently deployed in Iraq when my wife had some problems with the battery keeping a charge.
Some friends hooked her up with a new battery and installed a radio that I had in the trunk.
Since ive been back my service light stays on even after many attempts to reset and the tachometer does not work unless the dome light switch is turned on. Also if I don't turn the dome light off the dash service lights will stay on.
I can't wrong my friends for trying to help, but I think I have some wires crossed somewhere.
Can anyone help with a good place to get some wire diagrams?

Welcombe to the zone from the mods!
I can point you towards some wiring diagrams if you really want them, but most, if not all, of your problems, point towards problems with the SI (service interval) circuit board which lives in the front half of the instrument cluster.
It has two batteries soldered to it, which in your case are probably 3V NiCd AA sized ones. They fail with age and go short circuit, causing all sorts of problems with the instruments, several of which you have described.
The board can be removed and the batteries replaced, as long as they haven't leaked and corroded the board.
Do a forum search to find details. It's been discussed many times before.

I agree with your diagnosis but would be interested in the pointer to a wiring diagram for a 1992 325i cab (or similar).

Wiring diagram is multiple pages, I don't think I have a digital copy handy unfortunately.
Anyway, the fact that the tach works with the dome light on makes me think of a bad ground first, in the LHD cars there's a ground point on the firewall under the dash (basically two bolts with brown wires going to it), grounds pretty much everything in the interior and is a common cause of all kinds of funny gauge cluster problems.
Or perhaps on of your mates cut a ground wire while installing the radio. Or the radio is doing something funny, I'd try disconnecting that too.
But Brainmoooore's suggestion is appropiate here too.

Go to www.autolib.diakom.ru/CARS2/ Click on BMW, then go through the menus (all in Russian), untill you see " Mitchel on-demand". Click on this and you should find your way to the wiring diagrams.AndrewL wrote:I agree with your diagnosis but would be interested in the pointer to a wiring diagram for a 1992 325i cab (or similar).

The site has been reorganised recently and I've only just found them again myself.
