turn to 1st position, and insert a panel pin in the hole.

wiggle about a bit and it should come straight out.

put key in P1

instert small 1.5mm allen key/wire into hole in barrel, wiggle wire and the assy should pop out.

simple as that, in practice it needs a knack, so wiggle until it pops out dude, they always go in the end.

While this is kind of on subject, can I ask is it possible to remove the steering lock itself?, mine keeps locking on leaving me wiggling the key for 10 minutes before I can actually drive off or do I need a new ignition barrel and steering lock (all in one unit??).

Thanks

Sounds more like your barrel and / or key is worn than the steering lock being faulty.

You could try lubricating the steering lock to see if it helps (remove steering wheel for access), or there is a way to permanently disengage the lock!!

Hi Chris, I also figured on the key being worn so got a new key cut, sadly since there was no master key I could only get a copy of the worn key which has not improved the situation, have also tried to lube it with no better results, I guess getting shot of the steering lock is my best hope, any tips?.

Thanks for the reply by the way,

As long as the ignition barrel is the original, you can get a brand new steel key from the dealer.
The end piece of the steering lock that actually engages with the wheel can be removed, IIRC.
I disabled one a couple of years ago, and I think this is what I did.

What type of key is it? is it the standard or the one with the torch in?
Could do with a proper one to replace my cheapo 'bendy' key

may be worth changing the barrel too mate. the last one i bought (e34) was only about £35iirc and that's matched to the rest of the locks too. my wifes lock totally siezed so i had to remove her mtech 2 wheel and then remove the whole ignition switch / steering lock assembly the violent way! a load of aggro that could have been avoided!
