my abs light keeps coming on and off internittently.
Is this a break pad wear indicator? any other reasons why it would just come on itself other than dodgy electrics from an old car?

1/ Is it the ABS lamp or the brake wear indicator?
2/BMW don't do "old" cars or dodgy wiring. Try a new Peugot or Citreon if you want that.
Any dodgy electrics on E30s are a result of poor maintenance.
