This is a continuation from another post!

O'B'1 these are the components i have in my doors - take it that is the loom for the motor? - I cant be sure if thats the S mechanism you mentioned (the bad 1 winkeye ) where i'd have to change the windows?

That's the socket for the motor, but you have the old type mechanism.
Glass is easy to change, and for the price he's charging you, ask for the glass as well.

Cheers Brian! I'll do that and see what he says!!
It'll be a shame though coz all my windows are original and have the number plate etched into them...

Did you see my map light post? got them working but the lenses are missing! there is a part number for the lamps but not the lenses seperately. Do you know of an alternative?

Looks like you could cannibalize something from cheap Christmas cracker type magnifying glasses

If you have manual front windows, then you won't have the body loom for the windows fitted, so there won't be any hidden switches, although it is probable that you will have the looms in the doors.
If you have a four door with electric front windows and manual rears, then you will have the body loom for the rears, and the switch connectors will be under the console. There seems to be a 50:50 chance as to whether you will have the rear door looms fitted.

Not at all sure . Just observations based on past experiences.
It's possible, I suppose, that the looms had already been installed when the decision was made to build this car as manual windows.
Quick look under the front console will confirm. (Pull up the gear lever gaiter.)

All my E30s that have OE electric windows have a relay in the front left of the glovebox area. This id the relay that allows the windows and/or roof to work with the doors open, and is not fitted for some markets, noticeably the USA.
The one E30 that I have that has dealer retrofitted windows doesn't have the relay, and the couple with all manual windows don't have the relay, or any of the rest of the car body loom.

Relay's just an ordinary 5 pin change over type. You need the little loom that goes with it as well. Easily removed from a scrapper.

O'B'1 with the pluds i have already (pics above) wod it be a more acceptable sollution to go with having just two front electric windows? - i take it i'll still need to change the glass but if the plugs are there what else shud i identify! You mentioned the relay, dont suppose you'd be willing to take a pic? Its just easier that way theres alot going on under the glove box! though there are two obvious yellow relays at least! - Dont wana spend 90 if not neccessary...

The two yellow relays are for the dim dip driving light function. The relay for the windows is right by them, but yours won't have it, or the little loom that goes with it, even if your car had the basic body loom for the windows.
If you're just going for the fronts, with E36 switches, it's probably easiest to just feed a twin cable from the console area, through the hole in the door pillar plugs provided for the purpose, through the rubber tube to the doors and connect directly to the motors. This is the way the dealer fit windows are done.
Don't forget the overload cutout switch in the supply wire to the switches. (can go in a spare position on the dash if you like, as on some cabs).

8O Why didnt i follow in my dads footsteps and do electronics!!

Ok, so if i buy this kit and get the loom, relay and plug, can that go in under the glove box near the other relays? or are we saying that there wont be any wiring present to connect to - hense not worth the hastle?

Whats so special about E36 switches? i take it there are standard e30 switches then, which are not as good?

Next - just doing 2 windows where is the relay that switches the motor forwards/reverse (up/down) ? is the mechanism in the motor or does the motor require 2 feeds like an electric aerial?

Sorry for all the detail Brian, I want the windows but if i dont get my head round this it'll be a big waste of squids!!
Don't forget the overload cutout switch in the supply wire to the switches. (can go in a spare position on the dash if you like, as on some cabs).
I take it this is just a simple break in the power supply at some point. But why is it required what could happen without it?

much appreciated geez!! (i shud just save for a new motor rite?)

Relay in glovebox - This isn't essential, and isn't fitted to USA cars. Simply allows the windows to work with the doors open as well as the ignition on . The loom that goes with it has two special plugs that connect to the accessories socket, connections to different two pin door switches, and a feed out that goes to the cut out switch.
E36 switches are a bit more modern looking than E30 ones; electrically the same.
Reversing the motors is done by reversing the polarity of the two wires to the motor. This is done by the switches.
All you need is relay assembly in glovebox, feeding power to cut out, then power to switches, and twin wires to each motor.
