Just phone a garage up and they said even when they are adjusted they can still rattle, is this correct?

Mine rattle only when cold and only for about 2 mins

£ 94 + vat an hour !

Wear on cam and rockers is usual.

Std BMW TICK, TICK, TICK.

Adjusting can quieten for a while, but not £ 94 + vats worth.

i phoned up the Dealers and even they only charge £70 inc VAT so not all garages are cheaper than dealers i have found

I've bin there & bought the T shirt!!

My so called specialist said he needed the car overnight so that he could do the adjustments 1st thing in the morning ,after the £90 bill the tappet noise was still there , the owner/specialist! then said the Cam must be worn .!!

This proved to be true ,new cam 7 followers req+ usuall head work £ 700 latewr i ask the Question how is this wanker going around proporting to be a Bmw specialist, caring out tappet adjustments on a 120,000 engine & extorting money from the public, any specialist would surely understand that a 100K + engine needs a bit more than adjustment!!.

I no longer use that Garage ,but if like you say it's still noisy after being adjusted then suspect the cam, and also get a 2nd opinion

Agree with the rest of your post, but there's no reason at all to expect anything to be worn on a properly maintained 100k+ BMW engine, or a 200k+ one for that matter.
Everything, except exhaust valve guides, was still well within new spec when I stripped a 200,000 mile M20 a while back.

Brian i admire your loyalty to the cause& i choose not to question your judgment, but unless a owner can vouch for the completeness of the cars service history ie owned from new, (and there aint many 1 owner 16 yr olds around )the cams / valves etc seem to fall victim of earlier inlife neglect i guess that was my point

I myself am a BMW technician and have a 325 with a shrick cam fitted, and its a hell of a job to get the clearences spot on. They are better off a bit slack than too tight! Sounds pretty good at 7200rpm though!!!!
