Is there any way to tell whether my head gasket is on the way out, my car seems to be chucking out a bunch of smoke a lot of the time but I'm no mechanic. I had a similar problem with a 735 and ended up having to scrap the car!

If it is shot and needs replacing, how much can I expect to pay at a garage, i don't want to get ripped off.

If the headgaskets gone either:

Loads of grey "steam" out the back.
Water temp going right up and overheating.
Oil inyour water reservoir.
Water on your dipstick.
Pressurising your cooling system more than it should possible split a pipe.

I dont know what youd pay it varies around the country, but if your having the gasket done you might aswell have the timming belt done aswell as that has to come off, peace of mind and saves a very costly job when it snaps!

Hope that helps a little.
