engine noise when under strain

Sorry if this is a basic one - I am still learning about mechanicals having had the E30 for just about 2 months now (very happy).

I am hearing what I can best describe as a metallic rasp when the engine is under more strain (top end when revved harder, when in higher gear at lower speed). Goes away when not under great strain - normal acceleration etc. I am not overly concerned however was interested as to what it may be if this is at all common?

I reckon the exhaust vibrating in the support bracket off the rear of the gearbox. Clamp around the pipe always becomes loose.
